Who We Are

La Peninsula Community Organization, Inc. is a not for profit comprehensive Early Childhood program serving the Bronx communities of Hunts Point, Morris Heights and Tremont. The program has been in the community since 1965. The program serves children from 3 to 5 years old and their families. We have funded enrollment of 490 children and we have four Head Start centers in these communities.

At La Peninsula Head Start, we provide a safe, nurturing environment and individual attention to address the unique needs of each child. Each group of children in a classroom has access to a qualified teaching team. Each center is supervised by an Educational Director who has a Masters Degree in the field of Early Childhood Education.

Our History

An organization was incorporated in 1964 known as Hunts Point Coordinating Council Inc. This organization became the founds of Head Start in our community of Hunts Point. Ms. Daisy Bradshaw was President and Mr. Fred Williams Board Chairman, also known as Mama and Papa of Head Start.

At the same time, Head Start was in the planning stages in Washington D.C. under the leadership of President Lyndon Johnson. In 1965, President Johnson signed the bill known as the “War on Poverty”. From this bill, Head Start was born to reach out to America’s most vulnerable children and families.

In 1981, with changes in community, family needs, environmental and society needs, new challenges and demands on Head Start, La Peninsula Community Organization Inc., a spin off of Hunts Point Coordinating Council Inc. was awarded the contract for Head Start.
